Abstract: A relativistic multiple scattering theory (layer-KKR-formalism) for ferromagnets is formulated. Therefrom methods are derived to calculate bulk bandstructure andscattering and photoemission of low energy electrons from surfaces. Spin-orbit- and magnetic exchange interaction are treated on an equal footing. A method to decouple spin-orbit- and magnetic exchange interaction in the scattering of low energy electrons is demonstrated to be valid. It is shown, that magnetic proper ties of surfaces may be studied using unpolarized electrons. Furthermore the influence of spin-orbit-interaction upon the energy position and spinpolarisation of the Bloch states of ferromagnets and the violation of nonrelativistic dipole selection rules in photoemission from magnetic and nonmagnetic materials is analysed. The polarisation of electrons emitted from nonmagnetic materials excited by circularly polarized light is explained quantitatively.
